Muksamse’lapli had many photos, stories, and articles that I did not have space for in Before Gender. You see some of them below:
One of the several photos that was too low quality to include in the book.
Another photo of Muksamse’Lapli that was not high enough quality to include in the book (Herald and News, May 27, 1950, page 14).
I was excited to see that this 1982 article use correct pronouns for Muksamse’lapli (called by her English moniker “White Cindy” here). Thanks to the Shaw Historical Library at the Oregon Institute of Technology for sending me this article (Herald and News, Klamath Life Section D, Friday, Feb 26, 1982, page 37).
One of the two previously unpublished photos from the Kalmath County Museum
Colorized, restored, and enhanced
The other photo from the Kalmath County Museum was extremely similar, making it difficult to decide which one to include in the book!
Another photo from the Klamath County Museum c. 1900.
Leslie Spear (1893-1961) is one of several ethnographers who wrote about Muksamse’lapli. Note his derogatory tone. I do not consider his words particularly reliable (Klamath Ethnography, Leslie Spier, University of California Press, 1903, available on HathiTrust).
