Ray Leonard was one of the first chapters I wrote for Before Gender. He had a long paper trail, and I immediately knew I had to include him when I learned that his family was accepting in the 1860s! He stayed away from publicity most of his life, so we are left without any photos of him. However, you can see his death certificate below.


Famed doctor Mary Canaga Rowland recounted meeting Ray in her autobiography, As Long As Life: The Memoirs of a Frontier Woman Doctor. I couldn’t include the full 1.5 pages in Before Gender, so here they are:
